Jake Oleson returns to Mesh with a deeply personal three-track EP, sharing the soundtrack to his 2023 short film Given Again.

After his personal life was upended by an identity-shattering revelation, Jake’s sense of reality collapsed. Searching for some form of stability, he became consumed by questions of consciousness and perception, as familiar structures of meaning began to dissolve. Turning to 3D scanning spaces from his childhood, he found a way to anchor himself in the physical world, using image and sound to work through his grief.

The film, Given Again, follows a painter who becomes captivated by the exposed roots of a fallen tree. As her fixation with the pattern intensifies, her perception of reality begins to fracture until holding on becomes impossible. Similar to Jake’s process, the making of this film and EP allowed him to face emotions he’d been avoiding, learning to understand, accept, and ultimately integrate them.

‘undertow’ layers faint vintage pianos behind lush tapestries of tape fuzz and animated textures. ‘aporia’ rolls percussive syncopations through tense harmonic clouds and warm chords. ‘given again’ follows bouncy drumwork through dubbed out atmospherics and cathartic buildups.

Sonically, the results blend subtle electronics with vast cinematic textures. Faint vintage pianos sit behind lush tapestries of tape fuzz and animated sound, blurring the boundary between synthetic and organic. Climactic pads rise through broken drum patterns, nodding to the dancefloor while remaining firmly cerebral.

The result is an introspective work exploring the space between self and sound, control and release.
